Dec19

Shalom Everyone

Each month I create my own desktop to fit the season and mood that I want to embody for that month. One of the ways I do this is by picking a quote and placing it front and center on my desktop. Each time I log into my computer, open a new app, or simply clear my screen of distractions, I am reminded of the quote that I have chosen for myself for the month. For December, I chose a quote about snow because my toddler currently loves playing in the snow on our walk through the front yard to the car each morning. My quote this month is:

You are never too old to play in the snow”

Now, I am not suggesting that everyone runs outside, lays down in the snow, and makes a snow angel whenever you have the chance. While that is my daughter’s favorite thing to do right now (especially when she does not have snow pants on), it’s definitely not mine. Rather, I am encouraging everyone to find a way to get outside and enjoy themselves. Take a moment to take a deep breath in and smell the crisp air. Catch a snowflake on your arm and remind yourself that each and every snowflake is different and unique.

Speaking of catching snowflakes, did you hear about the snowflakes in Canada that were all mogen david shaped? I saw this story across my social media feeds in early December and it only reminded me of my quote of the month. On December 4th, 2023, around 20,000 Jews and Israel supporters gathered in front of Canada’s Parliament building - similar to the march in Washington D.C. in November. While speakers were on stage delivering their remarks, it began to snow. Rabbi Shaanan Scherer caught one on his clothes and noticed it was in the shape of Jewish star. He looked around for more and continued to find mogan david snowflakes. Talk about a chillingly beautiful moment!

As 2023 comes to a close, I want to challenge each and every one of you to catch at least one snowflake. Admire the beauty that is around us this winter. Embrace the uniqueness of yourself, just as the snowflake is unique from all others. And of course, if you are so drawn to make a snowman or snow angel this winter, do it!
