Yizkor
Yizkor – literally means “Remembrance”. Yizkor is both a specific prayer recited at a burial as well as a sub-section of the prayer service on four special occasions in the year. On these four occasions the Yizkor prayer is the anchor of this section. The four days are: 8th Day of Pesach, the 2nd Day of Shavuot, Yom Kippur, and Shemini Atzeret (the 8th Day of Sukkot). Oftentimes during the Yizkor service, paragraphs of remembrance of major national historical Jewish tragedies are included as well as a paragraph of remembrance for all deceased members of the congregation. After the Yizkor prayer, Mourner’s Kaddish is recited by all of those present.
