Friday Evening

Prayer

Friday – evening marks the beginning of Shabbat. The traditional term for this service is Kabbalat Shabbat, the Welcoming of Shabbat. At Temple Beth Shalom, we welcome the arrival of Shabbat in a number of different ways. In all of these, we aim to bring joy, peace and a sense of community through song, English readings, and traditional liturgy. We relish the special atmosphere of Friday night, the chance to leave the hectic nature of the work week and usher in a day where we can draw closer to God and to recharge our energy.

On the first and third Friday each month, the service starts at 7:30PM. On the second and last Friday, we begin at 5:45PM. The second Friday every month is a child friendly Family service followed by a Potluck Dairy Dinner. We also welcome each of our Religious School classes to lead us at least once during the year. Our teens also lead us several times a year. In addition, we are proud of the several Lay Led and Ancient Wisdom –Modern Words services focused on a specific theme or time of year. The impetus comes from a dedicated cadre of members, combining poetry, musical instruments, special readings and classical prayers.

The later Friday evening service is followed by Oneg Shabbat. This is a chance to visit with one another and with guests over tea, coffee and cake.
